Situated between the Swimming Pool and the High School in Queen Street, Victoria Park was originally built as a recreation ground to commemorate the 60th Reign of Queen Victoria in 1897. It had been used as a football oval and cycling track but in 1976 through the aid of a Government Grant it was turned into a man made lake and islands. Initially it was thought that the water for the lake would come from a bore within the park but after many unsuccessful bores were sunk it was decided to pipe the water from a bore which is about a kilometre east of the park. The lake was re-modelled in 1998 after it became evident that the bore was struggling to keep up with the water due to evaporation and seepage. The playground in the park was funded jointly by the Apex Club and the local Council and cost $50,000. There also is a deer enclosure, bbqs and toilets. The ornate fence which fronts onto Queen Street was made by Colin Campbell (the man who made the trains on each entrance of the town) and five men who were part of a job retraining scheme. Colin taught the men under his charge how to make the fence panels. It is valued at approximately $70,000. |
