Home    'Y' Class Locomotive
Y Class LocomotiveThe "Y" Class number 82 Locomotive is situated alongside the Rotunda in the Main Street.

It commenced running in this district (Northern Division) in 1888 and operated in this area until 1919 when it was transferred to the South East Division. It worked in that Division until 1931 and then was returned back to Peterborough where it worked until taken out of service in 1960.

After the "Y" was taken out of service it was placed alongside the Swimming Pool in Grove Street as playground equipment and remained there for 40 years.

In the year 2000 the District Council of Peterborough decided to restore it and placed it in its current location.

There is an interpretive board at the front of the train that explains about the history.
